The Winners of our Valentine's Day Contest

My wife and I first met online; I saw her profile and sent her a short message.  She responded and soon we started talking everyday and every chance we could. We finally decided to meet up on a pleasant Sunday afternoon at a nice downtown coffee house.  When I walked in our eyes met instantly, her beauty and confidence filled the entire room.  I ordered my coffee and the second I turned around she offered a handshake.  From that second on I no longer felt shy or nervous.

Well, a proposed ten minute meeting over coffee turned into an hour at the coffee shop just talking about everything, school, jobs, family, friends, and hobbies.  It seemed we could not get enough of one another, we truly felt comfortable and safe with each other.  About an hour and half into our conversation she got hungry.  So, we decided to take a walk in the warm weather to a local restaurant and proceeded to talk for a couple more hours.

During lunch I was just awe-struck, I kept staring and smiling, I never felt so warm and happy.   Finally, she kept noticing me staring at her and looking into her eyes.  So, she asked “what are you looking at?”   I responded, “You are absolutely beautiful!”  Her face became beet red and she said “Thank you” with a shy smile and a few blinks of her silver eyes.

I actually couldn’t believe I told a perfect stranger my feelings, it just sort of came out of nowhere.  I am usually very picky and meticulous in my wording.  But, these words just had to come out, unconscious or conscious my soul told me to say it to her.

We finished our lunch, sat for a few more minutes, just smiling, laughing and getting to know one another, and then it was time to depart.  I opened the door for her and we stood on the sidewalk a few minutes longer neither one of us actually wanting to say the goodbye.  Finally, we departed, I got back on the bus, I remember acting like a school kid with my first love and she walked home, I distinctly remember her turning to get one last look!

Later that night we were both online and we both seemed so fascinated with one another and we couldn’t stop telling one another what a great time we had that day.  After that we had a formal date, I presented her with a Gerber daisy and dinner at a nice restaurant.  A few weeks later we were exclusive and never looked back.  We could not stand to be five minutes away from each other.  To this day I love her with all my heart, I will never forget that first day, every day since, every wonderful experience and every sweet kiss.  We were married almost a year to the day of our first meeting.

  • I waited a long time to get married, and I found the happiness that was missing in life when I did. I first met my wife in 1990, over 18 years ago. I went to high school with Michelle's cousin, and I was working at KU Med. It was first job out of college, and I was young, and I liked to have a lot of fun. We were introduced as a matter of fate. She had just graduated from college, and had accepted a job, also at KU Med. Amazingly, she had just begun working in the same Microbiology lab that I was also working in. We worked together for a few years, and in 1992, I decided to leave Kansas City for that big Texas City of Dallas. Throughout the years, we always called each other, vacationed together at the lake, and “coincidentally” would run in to each other whenever I was in town for an event, or for the holidays. I had asked Michelle a couple of times over the years if she would marry me, the first time, perhaps half-jokingly. But I always knew she was the girl for me, my soul mate, and I was persistent, which I have been told is a family trait.

In 2005, I happened to be in Kansas City for the holidays, and we were together with a big group of friends and family the first night I arrived. It seems funny now, but one of my Mom's friends in attendance that night said "you two should get married". That Saturday, December 25th, it was Christmas night when I proposed to my wife. It was far from fancy. We were at Moe's Chez Charlie's on Broadway, and it was close to midnight when I ask Michelle to marry; expecting for her to say “No”. This time she said "Yes", and some dude yelled “You’re gonna regret it in the morning” after the band announced our intentions. I have always been a little lucky, or in this case, a lot lucky. I was 40 years old when I got married three years ago. Some people said we were crazy. We weren't even living in the same city....how could we be getting married? Others said that we caused the Tsunami that occurred that Christmas. For those of you that have found this happiness, Happy Valentine’s Day. For those who have not yet found your soul mate, this is proof that you will! I love you Michelle.

  • Dave never had girls over at his place, so my husband meeting me there seemed highly improbable.

In January in 2002, my friend Sara says to me, “Hey, come over to Dave’s. His friend Tristan is here. You might like him. We can hang out.”

I was staying at my parent’s place in Kansas City (I lived in St. Louis). My dad gave me a curfew despite the fact that I was 25 years old. I drove to Dave’s and knocked on the door. Sara answered, and behind her this was this nice-looking guy with brown eyes. I’m a sucker for brown eyes. I thought he was handsome. He was outdoorsy and funny. Dave’s apartment was super cold because he was cooking Cajun food and had the windows open so he wouldn’t set off the fire alarm. Tristan gave me his jacket to keep me warm. He challenged me to a game of darts.

Darts has always been a difficult game for me, and I must confess, I’m quite bad at it. I have played darts for many years and often my errant shots miss the board entirely leaving huge holes in the wall space surrounding the board. We played darts for a long time that night – and despite the odds, I won! When we tell this story someone always asks if he let me win. He says yes, I say no. I’m the author here, so I can tell you the absolute truth: He did not let me win. I dominated his game and he lost big time.

So we liked each other but we were both chickens. No one asked for anyone’s number. I thought about kissing him just out of the blue, but we each retreated to our own cars.

I went home and thought about how much I enjoyed meeting Tristan. I thought he was a very interesting man – meeting a man that stuck with me didn’t happen very often. I percolated on whether to call Dave so that I could see Tristan again, or whether I misunderstood signals. A week or so later, Tristan emailed my friend Sara to see if he could email me. We emailed, t hen talked on the phone, then had our very first date on Valentine’s Day weekend of 2002 – the 15th of February to be exact. We went to lunch, watched a movie, went to dinner, and had drinks with some of his friends – now our friends – and had a really great weekend together. I moved to Kansas City a few years ago to be closer to Tristan and our first weekend grew into many. Now we are married with two dogs and two cats, a home, and lots of love to share.

The improbability of me meeting Tristan - through my girlfriend - at a guy’s house who never had girls over – all these variables make me think the stars must have been aligned just right for Tristan and I to meet. It was just meant to be.

  • My boyfriend and I met in the fourth grade, he was a new kid to the school.  He dressed very different from all the other kids.  And I had a huge crush on him, so I would tease him about his clothes and the way he wore his hair.  I was crazy about him!  I would go out of my way to tease him just so I could talk to him.  The crush lasted about three years and then we went to middle school and he became interested in my best friend.  They dated and then she told me to dump him for her because she didn't want to, so I did. Then highschool came and went. We went to the same school but stop talking over the years.  Then college came and went. We went to different schools he went to the middle of Kansas and I went to New York.  About half a year after college I moved back to Kansas City heart broken from New York.  When I moved back I told myself I would not date for a long time....

After moving home back into my moms house and taking my old grocery store highschool job.  He lived a couple streets down from me with his folks too. One day he came into the grocery store.  Then I went for a jog one day and he passed me in his car.  Then I went out to the bar one night for drinks with my friends and he was there at the same bar. Then I went to a house party one night and he was there.   Eventually over facebook we had been writing messages back and forth thinking how crazy it is that fate keeps putting us in the same spots.  Then after the house party he got my number and asked me out to the movies.  Ever since then we have been dating.  We had one of our first dates at Po's last summer.  I was excited because I got to pick the place to eat!  So I picked something neither one of us had ever had before and it turns out it is one of our favorite places that we love to eat at now!

  • The Story of Lauri and Nik

Lauri and Nik met in seventh grade. They had some of the same friends so it was inevitable that they would meet! Lauri had a big crush on Nik ever since she saw him. Nik claims he also had a crush. Throughout high school, Lauri and Nik were both in serious relationships with other people. But! That didn’t stop them from liking each other. At the end of senior year, Lauri’s relationship ended with her stupid boyfriend, and Nik’s long term relationship had also ended. The timing was perfect! They went to Prom together, graduated high school together, and now both attend UMKC. Nik is a tall, goofy, white guy. Lauri is a cute, little, asian girl. But together they’re a delightful couple. Lauri and Nik like to eat pomellos, paint pictures, spin around really fast in big fields, puddle stomp, and sit by the pool really late at night and sing songs. On February 5th Nik and Lauri will have been together for nine months! Lauri is very happy she finally got her man, and they are going to live happily ever after. We love dumplings and Po’s.

Po's Dumpling Bar: 1715 West 39th Street

Wednesday, January 14, 2009
The dumplings at Po's Dumpling Bar are definitely homemade, but they won't knock your socks off. What will knock your socks off is the marinated cabbage and pork soup. Seriously, this was one of the most interesting and delicious things I've put in my mouth all year. I think they should change the name to "Po's Marinated Cabbage and Pork Soup Bar." You don't like cabbage, you say? Well, there's no hope for you. May I suggest the Orange Beef?

Po's Dumpling Bar

Anyway, I like the vibe of Po's Dumpling Bar. It is very casual without the design and pomp of nearby Asian powerhouse Blue Koi. Po's is a little more DIY in its decor and a tad less pompous than Blue Koi in terms of its menu, ambiance and service. Of course these are things that May pointed out a long time ago.

Po's

Po's is basically a Chinese restaurant, and they have the menu to prove it. They offer a few typical Chinese-American staples like Cashew Chicken, Beef with Broccoli and Sweet and Sour Chicken under the somewhat misleading menu heading "Traditional Lunches." Though I don't often order these sorts of things it is nice to know that there are options for...uh, people who like that kind of food. You know, like your parents.

The menu also features a number of noodles, soups, and noodle soups. I ordered something called "pan-fried noodle" with beef which was a little bit of a surprise. It was a rather pedestrian stir-fry on a bed of crunchy noodles.

Pan-fried noodles

I have always been mystified by the crunchy chow mein style noodles, and I remained mystified. I just did not find it to be a pleasant texture component, particularly when some of the vegetables were crunchy as well. Even had the noodles been soft, i would not have been thrilled with the dish, though. The beef was on the tough side and had a minerally undertone that I found unpleasant. The preponderance of baby corn was likewise a disappointment. Between the baby corn, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts, most of the vegetables came from cans.

The lunch entree aside, my experience was actually quite good at Po's. The real action seems to be on the appetizer section of the menu. They offer steamed dumplings, pan fried dumplings, shrimp dumplings, several kinds of buns, seaweed salad, and these delightful lettuce wraps with minced chicken and hoisin sauce.

lettuce wraps

They also have a ton of soups available. If they are all as delicious as the cabbage and pork soup, I'm going to be a regular customer. The bowl size ($4.95) is easily enough for two people to have their fill before a meal or one person as his meal. I couldn't tell what kind of broth they used but it was as strong as a beef broth. It contained delectable, floating bits of shitake mushroom, green onions, cabbage and pork. I can't adequately describe the flavor for you, just go try it.

Marinated Cabbage and Pork Soup

Po's will not compete with Blue Koi for the yuppie dinnertime crowd, but for those looking for a quick, cheap lunch, it can be very good indeed. If you have visited and had something you enjoyed, let me know in the comments. I think once you know what you like, you'll be a repeat customer. I'll be back for that soup.

Po's Dumpling Bar on Urbanspoon

You are in good hands when the owner, Po Hwang, is your server and his wife, Ow, is in charge of the kitchen. Po’s is trying hard to cater to palates of all types, but ask the owner for his authentic Asian favorites on his menu and you will enjoy tender dumplings and home cooked Chinese dishes, just like, well, Po’s Mom used to make. Do not miss the Emperor’s Dumplings, get 6 pan-fried dumplings with savory filling of your choice for $6. Mao Po Tofu with ground pork and Beef with Tomato over rice are both around $10 and excellent. TELL: Po you like it hot and spicy and he will be happy to dial up the heat on any dish
